About the Artist

About Rolf Stenberg

I am a working sport photographer and digital painter, based in Dublin, Ireland. I have been photographing professionally since 2010, with a focus on equestrian and sporting events across Europe.

My background is journalism. I hold credentials from the Association Internationale de la Presse Sportive and from the Association of Sports Journalists Ireland. These give me accredited media access at major events including the Dublin Horse Show, where I have photographed for over a decade, and the Falsterbo Horse Show in southern Sweden, which I have attended annually for the past ten to twelve years.

The work

The paintings on this site are created entirely from my own photography. I do not work from images sent by clients or from stock photography. Each piece begins with a moment I captured at an event with my own camera.

The painting itself is done digitally, by hand, using a graphics tablet and a digital pen. There is no AI involved. There are no filters or presets. Every brush stroke is placed deliberately, layer by layer, over multiple days. A single piece typically takes between three and seven days of work to complete.

The technique took me two years to develop to the point where I was satisfied with it. I do not reveal the specific tools or process, but the principle is straightforward: the same observation, time, and craft that go into traditional painting, applied through a different medium.

Swedish and Irish

I was born in Malmö, Sweden, and grew up in Oxie, a small place just outside the city. I now live in Dublin. This dual background shapes my work in practical ways. I am at home in both the Irish and Scandinavian equestrian worlds. I attend events in both countries. I work in English, Swedish, and to a lesser extent the other Scandinavian languages.

For Irish clients, this means a Dublin-based artist who can deliver and meet in person. For Swedish clients, it means a Swedish-born artist working at the highest level of European equestrian art who understands the context of events like Falsterbo and the broader Scandinavian show jumping circuit.

Selected clients

My work has been acquired by riders, owners, and breeders across Ireland, Sweden, and the United States. Pieces have hung in the homes of competitors, the offices of breeders, and the collections of horse owners who wanted to mark a specific moment in their horse's career.

What's available

The paintings shown on this site are available as limited edition signed canvases and signed prints. Each piece is offered in a small numbered edition. When an edition sells out, that piece is no longer available at that size.

I accept select commissions where I can take the source photography myself, either at events I am already attending or by special arrangement. I do not accept commissions from photographs taken by others.
